Unclean. Rinse. Clean. Repeat. — This is a small ritual that a person suffering from Obsessive-compulsive disorder can go through on a day-to-day basis, while the rituals start to become more elaborate and time-consuming while the thoughts are more intrusive, anxiety provoking and highly distressing.
OCD is a pervasive condition that can manifest as two aspects: Obsessions (Intrusive thought patterns) and Compulsions (Mental acts or rituals ) a person performs to ease the debilitating anxiety they experience due to the thoughts. Sometimes, a person can only suffer through Obsessions without compulsion. In either case, the distress level is always high.
OCD often begins in childhood, adolescence, or early adulthood. The earlier the intervention or therapy one starts sooner the relief can be given.
How OCD Therapy Helps:
Acceptance of the disease as it is without trying to change or control
Ability to tolerate the distress from the obsessive thoughts
Reduction in compulsive rituals
Ability to reach treatment goals, through constant self reflection and mindful exercises
Healthy lifestyle adherence
Counter negative thought patterns
